New Roblox Age Verification System Introduced
Online gaming platform, Roblox, has recently announced that they will be adding a new age verification system to their platform. Under this new system, players of the game will now need to verify that they are over the age of 13 before they can gain access to a number of Roblox’s certain features, for example, the planned spatial voice chat service. Although this new Roblox age verification system is opt-in, it is now required to access certain upcoming features.
How Will Players Use Roblox Age Verification?
When using the Roblox app, players will now have to scan an official form of identification, such as a government-issued ID card, driver’s license, or passport document to prove that they are over the age of 13. Once they have scanned their ID, the app will then ask players to take a picture of themselves to prove their identity matches that of their ID. In order to check if the picture that the player has taken matches the one that is on their ID, facial recognition technology will be used. For added security and protection for users of the app, Roblox has also announced that the entire process will be automated and that they will not store the ID photo or verification photo uploaded by players.
The Importance of Age Verification
Since the platform was first launched in 2006, Roblox has highlighted the importance of keeping their players safe online. The developer of the app recently stated that “Age Verification marks a big milestone in our long-term vision of building a trusted, fun, and civil platform for everyone”. He also went on to say that “As part of that vision, we will continue to work on seamless ways to verify a user’s age, always respecting a user’s privacy. Over time, we’ll continue to introduce new and innovative ways for users to easily and securely maintain and protect their identity on the Roblox platform, unlock new and immersive social capabilities, and build and enjoy amazing experiences together.”
The new addition of age verification on the platform will be required to access Roblox’s upcoming spatial audio features, which will allow players to chat to each other when in close proximity of one another. Although this latest feature is designed to ensure creators actually are who they say they are, Roblox also hopes that creators will use this new addition of age verification as a signal of trust when searching for collaborators.
