Dating app Tinder commits to ID Verification

Dating apps have long had the issue of ‘catfishing’ with numerous cases of people meeting up with others online only to find out they are not who they say they are. Popular dating app Tinder has recently announced that it will be taking action to prevent catfishing by implementing a new ID verification feature.

Tackling catfishing head on

Catfishing is a very serious problem, especially when it comes to minors using apps like Tinder to speak to those older than them. Tinder currently has a minimum age limit of 18 years old but without proper ID verification in place, minors have been able to slip through the gaps.

According to a representative from Tinder, they have spoken with experts and members of the app to determine the best route forward. They said: “The product will begin as voluntary, except where mandated by law, and based on the inputs received will evolve to ensure an equitable, inclusive and privacy-friendly approach to ID Verification.”

This kind of verification is actually already implemented in Japan, arriving in the country in 2019 due to a mandate in the law.

Have they done the right thing?

Despite the promise of a safer space for users by Tinder, some users have expressed their concern over having to offer up sensitive data just to date online. This may result in some users moving to other platforms in an attempt to keep their data private.

However, it is clear that Tinder is looking to improve the safety of users meeting up with or chatting with people online who are unknown. By implementing an ID verification system, Tinder can provide some assurance that users live in the right location, are not impersonating anyone and are aged above 18 years old.

Will this spread?

Most social networking sites do not ask for ID verification on sign up but there has been some debate more recently over this kind of change being implemented. With a big organisation like Tinder moving towards ID verification, there could be some new changes on the horizon.
