FDA Unveils New Steps to Protect Youth From Tobacco Products
US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Unveils New Steps to Protect Youth From Tobacco Products
Data just published as a result of the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey presents worrying findings relating to the use of flavoured nicotine products by young people in the US. Whilst e-cigarette use amongst high school students had dropped to 11.3% in 2017, there has been a 78% increase over the past 12 months, with 1.5 million more students using the products.
FDA Moves to Halt Nicotine Addiction
Commissioner Gottleib, for the FDA, stated that he would not allow a generation of children to become addicted to nicotine through e-cigarettes. He re-iterated his concerns about the use of flavours designed to appeal to young people, and noted that 90% of nicotine addicts were introduced to smoking before they reached 18.
A New Policy Framework for Responsible e-Cigarette Manufacturing and Sales
The FDA has delivered a new Policy Framework which focuses on the e-cigarette products with flavours that appeal to young people such as gummy bear, chocolate, or cherry. Presently manufacturers have been given a 90 day window to remove products with these flavours from stores and online sites which don’t have adequate age verification procedures.
New guidelines around ‘heightened’ age verification online are expected to be announced soon. Commissioner Gottleib has said that the aim is to maintain access to e-cigarettes for adult smokers trying to give up, whilst restricting their use by young people.
AgeChecked Software Encourages Responsible Online Sales
It’s in all our interests to encourage an internet which protects young people from products that could do them harm. AgeChecked software provides a simple way of verifying that customers are able to buy age-restricted goods legally. The age check is achieved seamlessly by requesting verification documentation from a list of options. Once the age of the customer has been verified, an account is set up and future transactions can be verified by using an AgeChecked password.
