Online Adult Content Age Check
Online Providers Required to Age Check Adult Content
In April last year the Digital Economy Act 2017 received the Royal Assent and is due to pass into UK law as early as April 2018. The act is a more comprehensive replacement for the 2010 Digital Economy Act, and it is concerned, primarily, with electronic communications infrastructure and services. This has very real consequences for online providers of adult content in that they are required to ensure that their users are 18 years old or over. Failure to put adequate age verification checks in place could result in fines of up to £250,000, or 5% of turnover.
The Best Way to Age Check Adult Content?
The challenge for online providers is to find a method of age verification for adult content which accedes to the requirement of the law, without shaming or humiliating customers who are doing nothing illegal by accessing their websites. The UK government has suggested that a driving licence, or passport, could be used as age verification, but providers are concerned about the amount of extra work this could entail, and the potential for fraud, given that customers can easily borrow someone else’s documentation.
A Streamlined Way to Age Check Adult Content
The CEO of AgeChecked – Alistair Graham – stated in a recent interview: “a simple tick box stating customers are over 18 is just not going to cut it”. That’s why AgeChecked has created a streamlined compliance infrastructure to solve the problem online providers are facing. Customers can be age verified by providing personal documentation such as a passport, birth certificate, or driving licence. Once documentation and personal information has been thoroughly checked, it is removed from the system and the customer is granted an AgeChecked account which they sign in with every time they want to provide age verification for adult content websites.
AgeChecked provides a fully secure and compliant system for online adult content providers to work with the UK government, ensuring that children and young people are unable to access pornographic websites illegally.
